Thomas Schmölz
Music Producer, Curator

graduated from the University of Siegen in 2001 in media and economics after several years working as a sound engineer at the Frankfurt Opera House. While still a student, he worked as assistant to the British composer Benedict Mason, supervising several world premieres of his works, last "felt|ebb|thus|brink|here|array|telling" at the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2004. In 2002 he took over the financial management of the FilmPhilharmonie GmbH and put the genre of silent film music at the centre of his work. His involvement with this genre began in 1995 with his first collaboration with ZDF/ARTE for the series "Stummfilm auf ARTE".

At the end of 2004, he took the step into independence with the foundation of his own production office 2eleven. Parallel to the silent film music productions he set new priorities in the field of contemporary music. 2006 he founded the Hamburger Klangwerktage - Festival for Contemporary Music (2006-2011), which he conducted himself until 2008. In 2008 he took over the management of mehrklang - Gesellschaft für Neue Musik Freiburg e.V., for which he organized the annual "mehrklang Festival". The in-house concert series "Blind Date Music", which he founded in 2010 and curated until 2014, still enjoys cult status today. In 2015 he was entrusted with the project management of the third edition of the cresc...Biennale for Modern Music Frankfurt Rhein Main, which attracted national attention with its motto "Images of Sound". As an artistic producer he realised a concert tour with the Ensemble ascolta through Baden-Württemberg (2017-2019) and on behalf of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain a silent film cinema vaudeville tour through Hessen (2018-2019).

During these years he steadily expanded his activities as a producer for the silent film music genre. Although he continues to work on art music and music theatre projects, his work as a producer for the silent film & music genre is now his main focus. Many of his TV productions commissioned by ZDF and Degeto in collaboration with ARTE have enjoyed great success in opera houses, concert halls and music festivals throughout Europe. Most recently the silent film music production LA ROUE (F 1923) by Abel Gance with the world premiere played by the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin on 14 September 2019 in the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt Berlin and a month later the French premiere with the Orchestre National de Lyon in the Auditorium Lyon.

Many of the ARTE silent film productions have been released on DVD by the editions of the film museums in Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin and Vienna, Filmarchiv Austria and in the Edition ARTE on the DVD label Absolut MEDIEN.
